Related: About this forumOMGosh did you get the email from Social Security?
I cant get it to copy and paste, but its all about how pleased they are with The Bill. Were all going to be so much better off now etc.
It was eerie to see it in my email.

(55,375 posts)They're praising major changes to social security in the bloated budget-busting bill.
It's a lie. There are exactly zero changes to social security in the bill. There can't be, because it was passed via reconciliation, which doesn't permit that.
But they had to get out that propaganda, because one of Donnie's campaign promises was to eliminate the social security tax. But they couldn't do that, so they increased the deduction for seniors. Which affect more or less the same people as social security affects, but not exactly and any any case it's not the same thing at all.
Moreover, the savings are roughly half what eliminating the tax would have been.
So having an email come from a government agency touting a part of the bill that has nothing to do with social security is to convince people that he helped people save on social security taxes when he did nothing if the sort.
Creeped out to the max. I just took a shower and want to go take another one.

(3,764 posts)Here are the first three paragraphs. Creepy and bizarre.
"The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation's economy.
This is a historic step forward for Americas seniors, said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. 'For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trumps promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement theyve earned.' (1,280 posts)So, in the absence of a way to gut the SS trust fund faster by ending the return of SS income taxes back to the SS fund, they figured out a way to accomplish the same result with an extra benefit of short term fast wealth transfer instead of longer term.
It is a bit hard to explain what I am seeing. Money collected from taxation of SS benefits is returned to the Social Security system and either deposited in the trust fund or, when the trust fund doesn't have enough to cover benefits, used to pay current benefits.
Any change in the tax on SS benefits or change in the standard deduction for over age 65 or change in the tax rates affects the amount returned to SS.
The links below discuss the result of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) calculations which found that the OBBB and ending taxation on all SS benefits reduces the "solvency" of the SS trust fund by one year.

Donald Trump's Suggestion to End Taxation of Social Security Benefits
I might add that who, among the over 65 crowd, benefits from lower taxation is different for the two schemes since the end of taxation benefits everyone paying taxes on their SS. The OBBB doesn't benefit tax payers above the income caps.
