In the memorial post about the return of the bodies . . .

. . . of the two elderly abductees who were ripped from their lives by Gazans while they were taking a peaceful walk around the kibbutz where they lived. One of the replies had this line: "i cant imagine what ppl wd say if such terror came here."

Out of respect for the deceased, I chose not to respond to this in that thread, so I am starting this one.

We have to enter the realm of imagination and speculation here. Imagine, 20 years ago, a brutal terrorist based organization (maybe related to one of the modern drug cartels) was elected in Mexico whose sole purpose was to take back the land in the United States that was taken from Mexico around 175 years ago, legally, but unjustly. They believed that all the land, including California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming, was theirs.

Over that time period, the terrorists prepared. They dug tens of thousands of miles of tunnels, many secretly crossing the border into the US. Billions of dollars of foreign aid and drug money were spent on armaments and on making the leaders incredibly wealthy.

Finally, they were ready to attack, and they did.

Because there had been a long period of relative peace, the US was not prepared for the attack. During the attack, which reached well into what they considered to be occupied land, 42,000 Americans were brutally slaughtered, many of whom were peacefully gathered at the Coachella festival. 22,000 were seriously injured to the point of needing hospitalization. 9,000 were kidnapped and dragged across the border back to Mexico, where they were starved, beaten, denied medical care for their injuries, and sexually assaulted. Many were murdered. During the attack, thousands were brutally raped, some to the point where the injuries received caused their deaths. Many were children. Thousands of Americans were burned alive in their homes. Dozens of mothers were forced to witness their children being butchered. Children were forced to witness their parents being horribly killed.

The day after this horrific attack, much of the world had turned against the United States, demanding, even before there was a counterattack to try to rescue the hostages, that they cease fire and negotiate with the terrorists whose stated goal was to repeat the attacks again and again until there were no Americans left alive.

Within days, the United Nations condemned the United States, and world opinion shifted to support the terrorists. Being an American anywhere in the world was not safe, and hundreds were attacked while going to school or praying in their churches. Much of the world engaged in boycotts of American-made goods. The terrorists were gleeful. It did not matter to them that many innocent Mexicans lost their lives in the battles, for every death made for better PR campaigns. Videos were made of the horrific conditions along the border cities that had been attacked by America in hopes of both freeing the hostages and of taking down the government that permitted such an attack. The world was horrified by this.

Hundreds of thousands of missiles were shot from Mexico into the United States. Fortunately, they did little damage other than the hundreds of millions of dollars in counter-measures, lost productivity, and treatment of stress-related illnesses of those living within range of the missiles. Several nearby nations also began periodic missile attacks against the United States. The world seemed to approve of this, or at least failed to condemn it.

There are two endings to this story. America succeeded in its war, and Mexico was cleansed of the terroristic government, and after many years recovered from the war and joined the rest of the world as a peace-loving nation. Or, due to pressure from the rest of the world, the war was aborted, and such attacks became a regular part of life in the Once United States.
