The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum appeared to condemn a statement made by NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in which he defended the phrase Globalize the intifada, saying the word intifada had been used in translations by the museum.
Mamdani, meanwhile, responded to the accusations of antisemitism he has received since the statement in a tearful address Wednesday, telling reporters it pains me to be called an antisemite.
While speaking on The Bulwark Tuesday, Mamdani defended the phrase globalize the intifada, which has been used by pro-Palestinian protesters and seen by many as a call for violence against Jews, telling the hosts that the phrase was often misunderstood.
I think whats difficult also is that the very word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising into Arabic, because its a word that means struggle, said Mamdani, who has a long record of pro-Palestinian activism. And as a Muslim man who grew up post-9/11, Im all too familiar in the way in which Arabic words can be twisted, can be distorted, can be used to justify any kind of meaning.
In a post on X Wednesday, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum decried the comparison of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a major Jewish uprising against the Nazis in 1943, with the phrase, though it did not explicitly mention Mamdani.

What a fucking asshole! Typical. He's the victim as he proves Dara Horn's book "People Love Dead Jews" correct...again!

(35,467 posts)Will be pragmatic about this. They have these awesome candidates, this guy, and Cuomo. They had viable options and the top are this guy and that guy.
They'll go pragmatic - it's Cuomo.

(3,672 posts)The voting turnout for the NY Democratic primary was about 30% which doesn't seem very high to me.

(35,467 posts)Thank you.
There are 1 million unaffiliated voters in NYC. Not sure how that math is going to work in the GE. . . but they are there.

(41,967 posts)words, are meant with deep intention to bring harm to the Jewish people and their homeland.
But dont call his brand of Jew hate antisemitism!
Dara Horns book is brilliant for more than just one reason. She gives a good history of Jew hate through the ages and then shows us nothing has changed. This guy Mamdani could have lived 1,000 years ago and fit right in.
Im trying to not to say bad words so much, so Ill just say F**k him.

(29,270 posts)I was disappointed by the results. I feel as if I have nowhere to go with my feelings about this except this little safe group on DU. The "river to the sea" language terrifies me. It's either deliberate or ignorant, both bad options.

(3,672 posts)about 30%. The ignorance of some is astounding, but I fail to see this as a referendum of anything for the reasons I gave.

(35,467 posts)That 30% of the electorate voting is important. I think that the Far Leftists got their people to the polls.
These folks voted for Bloomberg what? Three times.
The General Election is going to be funny.
You have Sliwa, Adams and Mamdani. There are 8 or 9 other candidates in the race as indies along with Adams. Shit is going to get real.
