The World Cup is supposed to be the ultimate celebration of every nation on earth. So why was a fan singled out for flying an Israeli flag?At a match in Los Angeles, stadium security ordered a fan to surrender his Israeli flag while Palestinian flags nearby were left alone. When enforcement looks different depending on which flag you're flying, Jewish and Israeli fans are being treated as second-class participants in a tournament meant to celebrate global unity. That's not soccer. That's discrimination.
ADL is calling on FIFA to acknowledge what happened, explain why enforcement looked so inconsistent that day and commit to treating every fan the same going forward. Jewish and Israeli fans shouldn't have to wonder whether they are welcome at a global celebration.

I get that there are tensions with Iran right now, but the rainbow flag? Hard to know which country is finding that to be a problem, given the Trump administrations anti-LGBTQ stances.
No, the Israeli flag should never have been banned. But neither should either of these others.
From that standpoint it only underscores how bad a choice the US under Trump was to hold these games--although plenty of cities did their "damnedest" to make everyone welcome.
I hope to live to see a day when none of this occurs.
