What led to the election of Pope Leo XIV and how he might tackle political issues - NBC News

Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first mass as pontiff as some of the cardinal electors shared what led them to his selection. Cardinal Blase Cupich said the cardinal electors were looking for someone multilingual, who had lived on more than one continent and had pastoral ministry experience. Pope Leo XIV spent more than two decades in Peru as a missionary and priest, and he served as Bishop in Chiclayo, where there were widespread celebrations in the streets today. NBC News’ Lester Holt, Stephanie Gosk and Molly Hunter have the details. - Aired on 05/09/2025.
