(28,187 posts)It's unfortunate that most people only have it once a year. A whole turkey is not that difficult to fix, and I used to do it several times a year, not just for the holiday. Heck, there were times when in the middle of the week my kids would come home to a roast turkey dinner. Obviously not as elaborate as at Thanksgiving, but still.
People make far too big a deal out of cooking a turkey. And there are a bunch of bullshit memes out there about how you can't possibly cook a turkey so that if the dark meat is done, then the white meat is totally dried out. That's never been a problem in my experience. Buy a bird with a pop up thermometer.
Or that it's life-threateningly dangerous to cook the stuffing/dressing inside the turkey, because it will somehow grow fatal bacteria and all who eat it will die, or at least be sick. Huh? Just remove the stuffing/dressing from the bird when it comes out of the oven. No problem.
I've been known to fix a full turkey dinner for myself when I've been alone on the holiday, and enjoyed it immensely. Tomorrow I will be joining friends. I've made rolls and an apple cake, and tomorrow I'll do mashed potatoes. At their house I'll do the gravy when the turkey comes out of the oven.
Good friends and good food. It doesn't get better than that.
