In reply to the discussion: No, Barron Trump was not rejected by Harvard, Melania says amid university battle [View all]cyclonefence
(5,096 posts)my husband interviewed kids for admission to Princeton. He was stunned by the achievements of the applicants; not only did they all have perfect grades throughout high school and astoundingly high SATs--several perfect scores--but they all had outstanding talents in the arts/sports/community service. Community service was weighted heavily: things like starting community gardens and after-school programs for poor neighborhoods. I suspect Harvard looks for much the same in their applicants, and I doubt that Barron had anything to offer beyond good grades and test scores.
A doctor friend of mine told me his grandson was applying to Princeton and expected to be accepted. The kid had the grades and the test scores, but his "only" extra-curricular activity was being a chess grand master. I told my friend that if the kid wanted to get into Princeton, he'd better start a chess club in some underserved school or some other activity showing his intent to give back to the community some of the benefits he had received from being a smart kid. My friend scoffed.
The kid didn't get into Princeton. He's very happy at the University of Chicago.
