many of the immigrant rights groups have been repeating the same numbers over the past couple decades now.

This is regardless of the racist nonsense from 45 and his Nazi-hugging bigots. Anyone who "looks Hispanic", "speaks Spanish" and/or has a Spanish surname is "illegal" in their twisted white-supremacist minds.

But the problem in that community itself, that they are confronting for the first time (at least in recent memory), is that although their designation of "Hispanic" is "ethnic and/or as a language group", they never understood the convoluted structure of "racial classification" in the U.S. I.e., where a designation of "white" can be "given or taken away" (no matter what you designate yourself as). The Cubans are learning that as a hard lesson at the moment.

It's sortof an artifact of the ethnic hierarchies established in Europe where during certain eras, "southern (and often "olive-skinned" ) Europeans" were considered "inferior".
