the party is trying to deal with a nation that was founded by a group of elite, (with some slave-owning) racist and sexist men, with a set of principles that, at least on paper, are idyllic in the modern sense, but that were understood quite differently in the 18th century.

This in turn established a deeply-rooted system of white supremacy that is difficult to dislodge, and had to be challenged and chipped away through a number of Constitutional Amendments (one of which is being challenged as we speak, with a decision due by the very end of this year's SCOTUS session).

So while we try to chase "economics" as an "important issue" for the American public, a more primordial issue of "superiority" through "us vs them", has always been the bedrock, and at the moment, overlaid focus of that same public - and mainly due to the fact that this country is by no means "ethnically homogeneous" like most other countries have been (outside of their colonization and accepting others from those colonies as citizens).
