I took a close look at them when I lived in California, years ago.
I had been insured with AAA SoCal and when I bought a new car,
weeks later, I had a single car (no dui) accident that nearly totalled
the car. AAA paid up, but also nearly doubled my rates. I looked
around then at a lot of companies and found that many of them were
pretty sleezy about payouts and raising rates because it's Tuesday.

The company that stood out as solid, reliable and honest was
Nationwide, the company that my parents used. Now after 40
years and a number of cases where I have had to deal with other
people's insurance, we have had a few small claims on our policy,
paid promptly and without hassle. I would never use another insurer,
if I had a choice. Not the cheapest, but fairly priced in most markets,
and a very cleanly run business.

Good luck with your search!
