Open carry of firearms banned at Michigan polling places on Election Day [View all]

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, with the backing of Attorney General Dana Nessel, has ordered Michigan election officials to prohibit open-carry firearms at polling places on Election Day.

Benson sent the notice to clerk’s offices across the state on Friday, Oct. 16, saying the move is necessary to prohibit voter intimidation, disruptions and fear at the polls Nov. 3. The announcement did not cite any state law affording Benson’s office the authority to order such a ban, though Nessel is supporting the move after reviewing open carry laws.
