Homeowner is disappointed after HOA tells him to take down holiday light display [View all]
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.
Douglas Dwyer put a lot of work into the holiday light display at his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. But now, he's wondering why his homeowners association is asking him to take it all down when his neighbors seemed to enjoy it.
"They just love it. They come home from work, the people get to show their kids. They're taking their grandkids over from different communities. It's just something special," Dwyer said. Turns out, his HOA didn't feel the same. At first, Dwyer was unsure if it was related to his "Trump 2024" flag that sits in the middle of the display, but he was also asked to remove other lights and decorations.
Old Colony Realty, his HOA's property management company, asked Dwyer to "remove the flag taped to the outside of the building, all the lights on the outside of the building, and the decorations in the common area."
The property management company says Dwyer's display violates HOA because residents "cannot attach or store any material on the building or in the common areas."
Dwyer said the email definitely dampened his holidays.
"The miracle of Christmas should be something different than this," he said.
