Galveston church prepares for Biden's Juneteenth visit [View all]

By LAUREN FRICK and SAGE SCOTT The Daily News 19 hrs ago

Thursday’s Juneteenth service at Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, will be unlike any other because former President Joe Biden will be the church’s special guest.

Biden will attend the annual Juneteenth service at the church, 2013 Broadway, which is set to begin at 6:15 p.m., church trustee Sharon Batiste Gillins said.

“We've never had this before,” Gillens said. “We've never had a 160th anniversary. We've never had dignitaries of this magnitude to attend.”

Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the first places where General Order No. 3 was read, officially announcing the end of slavery in Texas. This event, on June 19, 1865, is the origin of the Juneteenth celebration.
