Have you called up the Apple Store about this? I am not sure that the rumor you heard that they are not upgradable is correct?

Just an FYI, you can save some money if you get a Apple-refurb from the Apple Store. Same warranty, completely and stringently restored and tested.

A fair number of my macs have been Apple-refurbished, as well as an iPod touch. All been great!
