as long as possible because one of the functions of the colon is to reabsorb water. You still have healthy areas in the bowel that accomplish this and it's a pain in the ass to have to compensate for its absence.

Still, I know people who opted for colectomy/colostomy who have said it was the smartest thing they ever did, trading sheer agony for a mere nuisance.
