Refrigerator may be the exception. Perhaps high electric usage is because refrigerators run continuously, 24 hrs per day while most heat-producing appliances run intermittently, for shorter periods.
I unplug my small heat-producing appliances- ex. coffee-maker- between uses, and turn off overhead lights when leaving a room, though not skimping on light for vision and safety's sake as necessary. (A fall from lack of light would be far more costly than an electric bill.)
