I know someone who went to a trade school in the 80s and they are still garnishing his wages.

He had them check after paying for decades and it turns out none of the money they have taken over the years has ever gone to pay off the original loan. It all went into interest, penalties and fees and the original amount owed is about one fourth of the current payoff balance.
